A unique amber exhibition prepared for the 100th anniversary of Gdynia has been extended until 4 October 2026. The exhibition has thus been included in the programme of events accompanying Gdańsk Jewellery Week 2026.
The exhibition presents outstanding works by Gdynia jewellery and amber artists from the collection of the Amber Museum, a branch of the Museum of Gdańsk. It was prepared for the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of Gdynia and, thanks to great interest from visitors, has been extended by over a month.
Baltic amber, Gdańsk, Gdynia, Pomerania
The exhibition shows how strongly the history of Baltic amber is bound up with the whole of Pomerania, and how important a role artists working in Gdynia played in the development of contemporary design. Visitors will see several dozen objects created from the 1960s to the present day, representing a variety of currents in jewellery design and in the artistic interpretation of amber.
Outstanding artists connected with Gdynia
The exhibition features works by outstanding artists connected with Gdynia: Paweł and Maria Fietkiewicz, Danuta Czapnik, Marek Mikicki, Wiesław Książek, Adriana Lisowska, Sławomir Fijałkowski, Emilia Kohut and one of the largest Polish amber companies, S&A Jewellery Design. The works on display include both classic examples of the Gdańsk and Gdynia schools of amber craft and modern pieces experimenting with form, material and the meaning of jewellery.
Historic brooches, medallions and contemporary works
Visitors will be able to admire an extraordinarily varied range of objects: from historic brooches, medallions and pendants by the Fietkiewicz couple, through compositions by Danuta Czapnik, to contemporary works by Adriana Lisowska. The exhibition shows the evolution of thinking about Baltic amber, from a traditional jewellery stone to a fully fledged medium of contemporary art.
A shared heritage
The exhibition is also an opportunity to look at Baltic amber as part of the shared heritage of Gdańsk and Gdynia. It shows that although the two cities developed in different historical circumstances, they are united by their maritime character, a culture of design and a long tradition of working with Baltic amber, not without reason called “the gold of the north”. The whole is complemented by pieces of equipment from an amber craftsman’s workshop and multimedia presentations.
The inclusion of the exhibition in the programme of events accompanying Gdańsk Jewellery Week 2026 underlines the importance of Gdynia and Gdańsk as the most important centres of Polish amber craft and contemporary jewellery art.
